By Design Websites has been through various iterations in its very long life. We started back in the 1980s when we developed a very powerful (for its time) Computer Aided Design (CAD) program. Back in 1984 when it was released, the IBM PC (as it was then known) was very much in its infancy and anyone wishing to use CAD in their work was forced into buying a very expensive mini computer system and some equally expensive software. Our unique offering ran on the humble BBC Micro which was cheap and easily available, and performed well enough for many small businesses to find it a great tool in their work. It was also purchased by many schools to use in their IT teaching which was just beginning.

The first version was called Novacad, and a later, more powerful version was released called Technocad. Both were sold through Technomatic, a company well known in the educational computer world. An internet search for "bbc micro novacad" or "bbc micro technocad" will still bring up some interesting entries.
Since then, we have developed small systems for local businesses as well as very large systems that controlled the entire sales process and accounting system for a multi-million pound business based in Essex. Other work has included the development of the computer control system for a radio network, software design to test cryptographic software, and the development of an alternative social media site called simplymyfriends.com.
